Who We Are
In 1992, Los Angeles, CA, was reeling from the violence set off in backlash to the beating of Rodney King. The idea of “shalom” was put forth at the General Conference of The United Methodist Church by a group of bishops seeking to become a catalyst for peace, stability and safety in their own communities and others.
Lancaster County became one of 400+ communities of shalom around the United States. Today, there are still about 150 such communities of shalom. Our organization is one of two shalom zones located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
We believe our group has remained active and relevant because over the years we have focused on one thing: providing a safe haven for learning so that elementary school-age children in Lancaster County can continue to grow and learn and eventually take their places in their communities as productive citizens. We are Shalom Partnership of Lancaster, Inc.!
"People seeking justice, unity and wholeness, so all individuals and the community prosper"
One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could lay his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him. But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” And he placed his hands on their heads and blessed them before he left. - Matthew 19:13-15
What We Sponsor
We contract with two certified teachers from each school that desires a summer academic enrichment program. The curriculum is developed by the teachers and their principals to fit the needs of their students.
Teachers develop programs stressing the fundamentals in areas of science, technology, reading, engineering, art and math (STREAM). Teachers are given the opportunity to present class material in unique and innovative ways that they cannot use during the course of the regular school year.
Two certified teachers for a class of 15-20 students assures that students will receive a degree of individual attention at each session. We focus on third to fifth graders but will consider other grade levels, excluding high school, in our sponsorship.
We will have four programs this 2021 summer - two in the Ephrata/Akron district and two in the Manheim Central district.
